In the United States, the number of bilingual adults lags far behind at <strong>only 13%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons for such a large gap in the number of bilingual individuals, but a primary reason trickles down to elementary students. In many areas of the United States, second language education does not begin until middle or high school. In many European countries, this important element of education begins in elementary school, if not earlier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may ask yourself: can\u2019t adults simply study and become fluent in another language? Of course they can, but it is significantly more difficult to do so the older you become. We learn by <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theitem.com\/stories\/why-babies-can-learn-2-languages-at-the-same-time,302461\">processing the different sounds of a language<\/a><\/span>. While an individual language uses only about 40 sounds, or phonemes, all the world\u2019s languages combined comprise of approximately 800 sounds.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incredible thing about an infant\u2019s brain, is that right after birth, it can distinguish between all 800 sounds. That means that infants can learn any language that they\u2019re exposed to. But as babies grow, their brains slowly figure out which 40 sounds they hear the most, and begin to focus in on those sounds. The general public thought that if a child was learning two languages, they would become confused between the two, and wouldn\u2019t progress in their native language on the same timeline that a monolingual child would.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We now know that <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/14\/bilingual-babies-listen-languages-dont-get-confused\/\">bilingual children progress at the same rate as their monolingual peers, and in some instances, show greater cognitive processing abilities<\/a><\/span>. In a study published last year, an international team of <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-86c50fc\" data-id=\"86c50fc\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2328ec4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"2328ec4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/baby-2553539_1920-2.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-5153\" alt=\"an asian baby with two speaking bubbles: &quot;mom&quot; in english and chinese\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/baby-2553539_1920-2.png 800w, https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/baby-2553539_1920-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/baby-2553539_1920-2-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd94dd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd94dd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers, including those from Princeton University, report that bilingual infants as young as 20 months of age efficiently and accurately process two languages.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey do not think that \u2018dog\u2019 and \u2018chien\u2019 [French] are just two versions of the same thing,\u201d Casey Lew-Williams of Princeton said. \u201cThey implicitly know that these words belong to different languages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7d1a876 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7d1a876\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-26f2418\" data-id=\"26f2418\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe632d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fe632d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3) Bilingual children have greater cognitive skills than monolingual children.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a53192 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a53192\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a a study out of York University in Toronto, 63 toddlers underwent a variety of tests designed to assess levels of self-control in thought and action. While most tests showed little to no difference between bilingual and monolingual toddlers, there was one test where the bilingual children significantly outperformed their monolingual counterparts: the Shape Stroop Test.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The toddlers were shown pictures of large fruits containing smaller fruits &#8211; for example, a large banana with a small orange inside it. They were then asked to point to the small fruits. Selecting the smaller fruit is challenging for a young child because of the natural instinct to pay more attention to the larger fruit. The toddlers had to exercise self-control or \u201cexecutive function\u201d to suppress the natural response of pointing to the larger fruit, and to pay attention to the smaller fruit instead.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of this test showed that bilingual children scored correctly 50% of the time, and monolingual children scored correctly only 31% of the time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These results suggest that bilingual children <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.little-sponges.com\/index.php\/2017\/12\/27\/bilingual-education-mold-kids-brains-better-resist-distraction\/\">may have an easier time focusing on one important thing<\/a><\/span>, not allowing other stimuli to distract them (selective attention); and change their responses according to the demands of the situation (cognitive flexibility). These are important elements of executive function, and can help toddlers tremendously as they prepare for their formal education.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c2338f8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c2338f8\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-14f12d8\" data-id=\"14f12d8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d26951 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5d26951\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4) Bilingualism prepares children for jobs of the future that will require strong communication and empathy skills.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c409e67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c409e67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that learning a second language improves a person\u2019s tolerance and empathy by building what we call \u201ccultural competence,\u201d or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening people\u2019s eyes to a way of doing things in a way that\u2019s different from their own.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By nature, language learning involves learning about different cultures. Children pick up clues about the culture both in language classes and through meaningful immersion experiences.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"http:\/\/de.hpu.edu\/hnguyen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanh Thi Nguyen<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/directory\/gkellogg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Guy Kellogg<\/span><\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have shown that when students learn another language, they develop new ways of understanding culture through<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1540-4781.2009.00983.x\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyzing cultural stereotypes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They explain that \u201clearning a second language involves the acquisition not only of linguistic forms but also ways of thinking and behaving.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, in turn, improves the bilingual individual\u2019s empathy skills as they learn to relate to cultures and people who are different than them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/collaboratehr.com.au\/ushma-dhanak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ushma Dhanak<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a leading expert in the field of HR, consulting and educating predominantly on emotional intelligence (EI) in the workplace, as the future of industries relies more and more on the EI of its participants. Because research has shown that EI will likely be in the top three desired job skills by 2020, Dhanak says \u201cempathy is a key competence in the workplace and one which is not taught or discussed as often as it should be. Greater social skills, more creativity, higher tolerance, and a slower aging of the brain are only a few.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gigi Luk, of Harvard\u2019s Graduate School of Education, studies the lasting cognitive consequences of speaking multiple languages. \u201cBilingualism is a complex and multifaceted life experience,\u201d she says; it\u2019s an \u201cinteractional experience\u201d that happens within \u2014 and in response to \u2014 a broader social context.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luk and her researchers are looking at the <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/gigi_luk\/publications\/effect-lifelong-bilingualism-regional-grey-and-white-matter-volume\">neuroscience of bilingualism<\/a><\/span> \u2014 at how bilingualism may affect the physical structure of the brain in its different regions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they\u2019ve found so far shows that older adults who are lifelong bilinguals have more white matter in their frontal lobes (important to executive function) than monolinguals, and that their temporal lobes (important to language function) are better preserved.
