(Amanda Morgan, 2019) <\/em>Before we could read or write the word \u201cball\u201d, we learned what it means and how to say it.\u00a0 <em>I think we all intrinsically understand that at the<\/em><strong><em> crux of literacy is the ability to convey and receive meaning through words, and that process begins with the spoken word.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong> I love<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"> <a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"https:\/\/notjustcute.com\/2017\/06\/13\/language-for-literacy-the-importance-of-building-vocabulary-in-preschool\/\" rel=\" noopener\">Amanda Morgan\u2019s<\/a> <\/span>statement:<strong><em> \u201cWithout vocabulary skills, reading and writing become labored and meaningless\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3bf90fe elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3bf90fe\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4645dc7\" data-id=\"4645dc7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72516e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72516e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, research has revealed that although people can and do learn word meanings incidentally, such learning most often does not come easily and may not be very effective (Nation, 2008). This means that for ESOL, DLL and bilingual programs, intentional vocabulary teaching is critical, and part of a teacher\u2019s job is to incorporate deliberate vocabulary teaching into each class to help students develop the breadth and depth of the vocabulary. (Michale Lessard-Cluston, 2013) \u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Little Sponges\u00ae approach to language learning is built on the idea that oral language and vocabulary mastery (both receptive and productive) is the key to building a strong foundation for success. \u00a0Little Sponges\u00ae program includes explicit vocabulary teaching and review exercises that can be done in class or at home. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before we get into breaking down how the Little Sponges\u00ae program builds vocabulary, let\u2019s talk about why should language learning focus so heavily on building a child\u2019s vocabulary bank?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2a15bf5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2a15bf5\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-18749f4\" data-id=\"18749f4\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3de9fca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3de9fca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a link between a child\u2019s vocabulary knowledge in preschool to their future academic success. A <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Relation-between-language-experiences-in-preschool-Dickinson-Porche\/67fb947cdbb040cd5883e599aa29f33dd3241d3c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 study<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the volume and quality of preschool teachers\u2019 \u201cteacher talk\u201d predicted their students\u2019 long term reading and comprehension abilities later in their academic years. When students are regularly exposed to sophisticated vocabulary in context, their reading and comprehension levels rise drastically.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child who has a larger vocabulary is <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19345740802539200\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better able to understand<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more of the context surrounding those words. This makes it easier for them to comprehend the material, process its meaning, and commit the material to memory. Students who develop this linguistic skill early on will undoubtedly have an easier time as they progress through school.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the amount and quality of vocabulary is a determining factor in future academic success, students who fall under a certain socioeconomic line often are at a disadvantage to peers who grow up in a more academically rigorous regimen.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1995, researchers <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wvearlychildhood.org\/resources\/C-13_Handout_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betty Hart and Todd Risley<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recorded hours of interactions between parents and children. What they found was that by age three, the average child from a family in the professional class heard approximately <\/span><b>30 million more<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> words than the average child living on welfare. It is also a much more child-friendly teaching method than drab worksheets. When children are able to engage with a story, they naturally pick up pre-taught vocabulary words, new vocabulary words, and the context needed to tie them all together.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is impossible to define all words and concepts using static images and verbal explanations, which is why Little Sponges uses several techniques to support vocabulary learning and improve comprehension. Little Sponges utilizes real life videos, acting of the puppets, context and audio cues to define new vocabulary and explain complex concepts. For example, teaching students about space and gravity can be difficult using flash cards and books. After watching the learning video a few times, students play the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #00ccff;\"><a style=\"color: #00ccff;\" href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/little-sponges-games\/Forest+Games+Samples\/french\/comprehension\/eng\/index.html\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehension games<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to test their knowledge of new content and vocabulary comprehension. Schmitt (2010, p 26) stated, \u201cthe more a learner engages with a new word, the more likely he\/she is to learn it.\u201d \u201cReceptive knowledge is important, but if students do little more than read or hear a new word, they are unlikely to remember it, let alone use it. If, however, they interact with the word (recall, say or write it) and think about its meaning and any similarities (grammatical, etc) to other words they know, then the incremental learning discussed here is more likely to happen.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Michale Lessard-Cluston, 2013) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the Little Sponges adventure videos, Mishka and Frog often \u201ctalk\u201d to each other, as well as to the audience, which invites student participation. In the Little Sponges review videos, Mishka and Frog ask questions about the story, giving students an opportunity to recall and use new vocabulary. It also helps when the teacher expands upon those questions.
